    Now that the children of Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens are all back to school, we start seeing more and more kids in our office with heel pain. Why is it that our kids were feeling fine all summer and suddenly you have to drag them to a podiatrist's office in the middle of the day?

    Rest assured, that you are not alone. A lot of kids start having pain around this year because after a relaxing summer of hanging out at the beach and playing video games they are suddenly thrust back into intense sports practices. A lot of kids we see this time of year are teen and pre-teen boys that have just started up the football season. These kids can get pain to the back of their heels that may actually cause them to limp. This pain is most commonly associated with an open growth plate and a tight Achilles tendon. Treatment often includes rest, ice, heel cups or orthotics and lots and lots of stretching. Occasionally, a child shows up with a fracture of the heel bone, which is a lot more serious of an injury. My advice is not to delay if your child has heel pain. Ignoring the pain this early in the school year may cause nagging pain and missed games throughout the season. Often, early and agressive treatment can resolve this foot pain before it gets worse!

These days we hear a lot of talk about lasers in the medical field, but there is little talk about how lasers actually work. Today, we will talk about the science behind our MLS Laser. The laser we offer in our office works to decrease pain and swelling for a variety of different issues. This is not the same laser that is used for fungal toenails.

The MLS laser is a cold laser. It uses pulsed infrared light that is painless. This light stimulates your body's own cells metabolism to both decrease swelling (or inflammation) and also decrease pain. The MLS laser uses two different wavelengths that work together to give the best benefit possible.

We recommend laser therapy for a number of different patients. We have found a lot of success for patients with Achilles tendonitis, plantar fascitis, ankle sprains, foot strains, and for our patients who have had recent surgery. After the initial consultation, each in-office session, takes only 7 minutes of your time. MLS laser therapy is painless and often a great option for patients to try as an alternative to painful injections or strong oral medications.

Living in Florida makes flip flops an unavoidable part of daily life. So how can you go about choosing the "right flip flop" for you and your kids? While flip flops will never be as supportive as a good pair of sneakers, there are few things to look for.

  1. Arch support built into the sandal. Don't confuse arch support with cushion. Cushion may feel nice, but is it firm enough to actually support your arch?
  2. A stiff sole. Many flip flops are made of thin flimsy rubber. Look for a sandal that you can not bend in half.
  3. Proper fit. One of the benefits of flip flops is that there are many different designs. Make sure that the straps are not rubbing on any pressure points, such as bunions or hammertoes.

Summertime is here in full force. Temperatures are soaring and children are home. This means more time in the water and less time stuck in shoes. Here are a few tips to help protect you and your child's feet:

1. Wear flip flops to public pools, parks, and showers. Not only will they help protect against cuts and scrapes, but they will also help protect against warts and other viruses.

2. Buy yourself and your children supportive sandals. I know it's not practical to live in sneakers, especially in the summer, but take the time to buy some sandals with some built in arch support. This will help prevent heel/arch pain in both you and your children. Also, limit the amount of time you spend barefoot. The constant lack of support can lead to foot pain in both children and adults. Remember, everything in moderation.

3. When exercising in the heat (or running around at summer camps), change into fresh, dry socks after the activity is completed. Fungus thrives in dark, damp places and loves nice sweaty, summertime feet.

Recent sports headlines have been humming with reports of Joel Embiid having surgery for a stress fracure in his foot. Joel Embiid was thought to be a top draft pick for the NBA this year, but a recent physical found a stress fracture in his foot that will take months to recover from. Patient's who have read this story have been concerned that they will also need surgery for their stress fractures. Rest assured, that not all stress fractures require surgery. In fact, with proper treatment, most stress fracture will heal with some combination of a cast, boot, or crutches. What makes Joel's injury different? Well, for starters, he's a professional athlete. Embiid will need to get back to training as soon as possible. For this reason alone, his physicians will want the fracture site to be as stable as possible. Second, he's 7 feet tall and weighs 240lbs. His height and weight alone equate to extra stress on his feet and will need the fracture site as stable as possible. How did Embiid fracture his foot? Stress fractures usually occur because of either: decreased bone strength or increased repetitive force on the bones. Embiid's height and career both add up to a lot of strain on his feet.
